We are a group of seven students and studying OnlineMedia respectively Media Informatics at the Hochschule Furtwangen University, Germany. Our professor, Prof. Dr. Stefan Selke, initiated this project within a study that lasts two months and is part of our bachelor degree course.

idetic – what does it mean and where does it come from?

“idetic” is a made-up word. It is related to eidetic memory. The “i” in idetic features the Lifelogger.

The Project itself

Our project has its focus on Lifelogging. Our principal object is to research the theme of Lifelogging practically as well as theoretically.

Lifelogging represents the collection, storage and interpretation of any digital ways to log ones daily routine. Photo-, video- and audiofiles but also other data like pulse rate are just a few of appreciable factors that we want to cover in our research.

Lifelogging is applied in different areas: It can be used for medicinal purposes, security (such as police, military) but also for memory research. People share lots of private information via twitter or Facebook and Lifelogging can be seen as a technological development of these social media applications.

Lifelogging

Lifelogging makes it possible to create a digital eidetic memory that helps one to augment ones memory. With appropriate hardware, we want to do Lifelogging with several subjects and analyse their logfiles and logdata. Another important object of our project is to create an appropriate web-platform where all the files and data can be presented. Of course, we’re also considering privacy and what is the best way to keep privacy for the Logger and how all the files and data can be filtered.

Hardware

We’re using the Vicon Revue which is based on the Microsoft SenseCam. Every 30 seconds, pictures are captured with a size of 640x480 Pixel.

Furthermore, we’ve had the idea of a Smartphone-Application which allows one to do Lifelogging with a Smartphone so that it is not necessary to have extra hardware. So we are also working on a Smartphone-Application since Smartphones become more and more important these days.
